Reduce payments for flagship Android phones
The Samsung Galaxy S21 and Google Pixel 5 represent a delicate amendment within the priorities of those 2 older rivals and collaborators.
These two prestigious mobile phone franchises were previously found to compete at the peak of the smartphone market and now have a slightly lower share. Several important compromises have been made to meet the relatively affordable price.
So how do these two less important flagships fight each other? We got 8 out of 10 points in each review, so please support close-quarters battle.
Samsung Galaxy S21 vs Google Pixel 5 Price and Availability
The Samsung Galaxy S21 will arrive in stores on January 29, 2021, and the 128GB model will start at $ 799 / £ 769 / A $ 1,249. The price of the 256GB model is US $ 849.99 / £ 819 / AU $ 1,349.
These prices are stable on Samsung’s official website, but when you shop, you can almost certainly find many deals on the S21. At the time of this writing, you can buy a 128GB Galaxy S21 from Amazon for $ 699 / £ 664.
Google will start offering Pixel 5 on October 15, 2020. The price of the 128GB model available is $ 699 / £ 599 / AU $ 999 on the official Google store, and prices have been strong since then.
Similarly, you can trade over the phone of a third-party seller, but while the Pixel 5 is out of date, trading by a third-party seller is often not as impressive as Samsung. At the time of writing, the Pixel 5 is priced at $ 699 / £ 574 on Amazon.
Both phones are separated from the glass and metal flagship scripts but in a very different way.
In addition to the Gorilla Glass 6 display, Google is already using glass as the entire material for the Pixel 5. The shell is an integrated aluminum chassis and the top has a unique matte bio-resin coating. Yes, Google basically covers its advanced metallic material with plastic.
This gives the Pixel a unique, practical look, but it also stands out from the same flagship crowd. Resin can also cover gaps in the body to achieve wireless charging.
The Pixel 5 is a relatively small smartphone measuring 144.7 x 70.4 x 8mm and weighing 151g. It’s smaller than the Galaxy S21 in almost every way, and it weighs only 151.7 x 71.2 x 7.9mm and 169g.
Samsung also used plastic for the body of the phone-or called its own vulgar word “glass” -but this time it feels like a clear compromise. Both the Galaxy S21 + and Galaxy S21 Ultra use glass with similar blueprints.
Nevertheless, the edges of the Galaxy S21 are still metal and look very unique in their own right. In particular, the design of the phone’s “contour cut” camera module is unique and at least partially solves the problem of integrating the huge bumps on the back of the phone.
Samsung’s color options are also much more interesting than Google’s. The selection of Phantom Gray, Phantom White, Phantom Pink and Phantom Violet far exceeds the slightly ironic Just Black and Sorta Sage products on the Pixel 5.
Both smartphones have a flat-panel display and a punched-hole selfie camera, but the Galaxy S21 puts it in the center and the Pixel 5 moves it to the left. I’m not interested in the latter option, but I sincerely support you back to a simpler view.
Another notable difference is the location of the fingerprint sensor. Samsung has chosen a more up-to-date display solution with an effective area 70% larger than before. Google has an old-fashioned rear sensor. Neither is the best, but I would like to pay tribute to Samsung.
As we decided earlier, these are the two small phones of our flagship product, especially if we are only considering Android devices.
This can be seen using two similar compact displays. The Samsung Galaxy S21 has a 6.2-inch AMOLED and the Pixel 5 has a 6-inch OLED.
In addition to sharing a similar powerful panel, there is also a similar FHD + resolution. It’s 2,400 x 1,080 for the Galaxy S21 and 2,340 x 1,080 for the Pixel 5.
Another important advantage of the Galaxy S21 display is its 120Hz refresh rate. The Pixel 5 screen can only be updated at 90Hz. It can still bring a smooth experience, but the Galaxy S21 can obviously do that.
In addition to screen fluidity issues, Samsung also makes the most of its display expertise with an excellent peak brightness of approximately 1300 knits. This is about twice what the Pixel 5 can achieve in bright outdoor conditions.
However, both phones are full of colors and support HDR10 + output. However, Samsung has undeniable advantages in display technology.
Samsung and Google take a very different approach to smartphone cameras.
Google is a master of image processing and computer vision, essentially using smart software to improve image quality. To this end, the Pixel 5 uses a simple 12.2-megapixel main camera and the discreet Sony Exmor IMX363 sensor that has been used in the Pixel series for many years.
It is supported by a new 16-megapixel ultra-wide screen with a very narrow 107-degree viewing angle. Again, Google uses image processing to repair the distortions that normally plague ultra-wide-angle lenses, rather than major optical advances. There is no telephoto lens.
In contrast, Samsung likes to set the weight of its hardware aside. For the Galaxy S21, this means a 3-lens camera led by a 12-megapixel main sensor with an f / 1.8 aperture. It is supported by a thick 64-megapixel camera lens and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens.
The advanced hardware of the Galaxy S21 can capture pixels that are much larger than the Pixel 5. The pixel size is 1.8 μm instead of 1.4 μm. A large telephoto sensor can also take pictures with a 3x optical zoom.
Compared to the bare Pixel 5, Samsung has more modes to explore. Director’s View allows you to view real-time views of three rear cameras at the same time and switch between them. Vlogger view allows you to record video from the front and rear cameras at the same time.
There is also a perfect single take that uses AI and slow-motion recording to capture and process different image types at once.
However, despite being a more powerful camera, much more can be said about the simplicity of the Pixel 5’s instant shooting, not to mention the Pixel 5’s excellent night shots and more natural color science. As always, the Samsung color may be a bit overly wrong.
When it comes to video, the Galaxy S21 can manage 8K at 24fps or 4K at 60fps, while the Pixel 5 can only reach 4K at 60fps.
Specifications and performance
These phones don’t combine it with the best performance, but the Galaxy S21 has obvious advantages in this special battle.
Samsung’s fragmented hardware approach means that only the US and Chinese versions of the Galaxy S21 will get the Snapdragon 888. The more widely used international version uses the company’s own Exynos 2100, which doesn’t work.
However, it’s still faster than a similar product on the Pixel 5, and Google chose the midrange Snapdragon 765 to save money. This is a very capable runner and I don’t think many will notice any performance degradation unless they launch a Genshin Impact or COD Mobile game.
However, there are certainly differences. The Galaxy S21 with the Exynos 2100 achieved a score of 3,367 in the Geekbench 5 multi-core test. This is about twice the Pixel 5 score of 1,617.
Both phones come standard with 8GB of RAM to ensure a smooth transition between open applications. The Galaxy S21 also has a 256GB option, but both phones come standard with 128GB.
The advantage of the Pixel 5 is that it uses the standard Android 11 on its own. It’s pure, neat, responsive, and certainly classy.
There are no redundant third-party apps on the Pixel 5. It’s just some of Google’s best apps. In addition, Pixel 5 updates Android 12 more than any other phone.
In any case, it should be faster than the Galaxy S21. To say the least, Samsung’s significantly modified One UI is a bit different because apps created by third parties and Samsung conflict with Google’s default regulations. The design is also very eye-catching-it’s commendable, but in recent years this frustration surplus has been fairly controlled.
Samsung’s ongoing repairs also mean that the “one” user interface is a more customizable user interface than existing Android devices. You can set the theme and make further adjustments. With the Pixel 5 approach, we need to think more about face value.
The battery power of the Samsung Galaxy S21 is 4,000mAh, while the battery power of the Pixel 5 is 4,080mAh. There is not much difference.
However, the benefits of this size, combined with a smaller, darker, and more mobile display, seem to give Google phones a durability advantage. The refresh rate of the Galaxy S21 display can vary from 48Hz to 120Hz, which helps save energy, but that’s not enough.
It turns out that the Galaxy S21 can usually be used all day on a single charge. However, using your smartphone’s GPS and other power-consuming components can cause the battery to run out before bedtime.
We tested the Pixel 5 and found that it had plenty of room for medium to high doses throughout the day. I am confident that I will promote it through media broadcasting.
Both smartphones basically need to be recharged every night, but the Pixel 5 seems to be better for heavy use.
However, the Samsung Galaxy S21 supports 25W fast charging, so it has won some endurance programs. It’s far from the fastest charging standard on the market (OnePlus 9 powers only 65W), but faster than the Pixel 5’s 18W.
Still, at least the Pixel 5 can provide the included charger. If you don’t own Samsung bricks yet, you will need to purchase them separately.
The Galaxy S21 also supports 15W wireless charging next to the Pixel 5’s 12W, and both smartphones support reverse charging to complement these low-power accessories.
The direct battle between Google Pixel phones and mainline Samsung Galaxy S phones was once an Android Championship battle. It is no longer sad or exciting.
It’s great to see these two giants looking at ways to add value to this market, rather than just fighting another expensive parts war. They came to a variety of fascinating conclusions.
With the Pixel 5, Google smartphones have never demonstrated software as they do now. Its features aren’t as good as the Galaxy S21, the display is inferior, and the camera hardware is far less advanced.
Nonetheless, Google’s existing Android OS can provide a great user experience, and its unrivaled image processing technology allows the Pixel 5 to take better-balanced photos in many situations. You will also receive the next Android update sooner.
If you are an advanced user, gamer, or consume a lot of media on the go, Samsung phones offer more than you want. However, if you want the purest, cleanest, and most relaxing smartphone experience, we recommend choosing Google.
